Tata Steel in the Netherlands is committed to sustainable steel production in a clean environment. It has expressed the ambition to produce hydrogen-based green steel by 2030 and the first steps are now being taken in this direction. In addition, Tata Steel's Roadmap Plus consists of dozens of environmental measures to improve the environment by maximum emission reduction.
The steel company forms the basis of many economic value chains and makes a substantial contribution to the economic value in the province of Noord-Holland and in the Netherlands. It is the largest and only steel producer in the Netherlands and contributes to protecting the strategic position of the Netherlands and Europe in the global steel industry.
Tata Steel IJmuiden and Tata Steel Netherlands contribute approximately 6% to the Dutch Gross National Product for industry and are a major employer. We provide approximately 86,000 jobs, of which 11,000 direct, 47,000 indirect and 28,000 induced. As the company considers innovation to be of paramount importance, Tata Steel has more than 300 people in the Research & Development department, where work is done on, among other things, the development of sustainable steel.
For its sustainable transition, Tata Steel IJmuiden will require new employees. Tata Steel's Academy has been an important part of the company for many years, responding to future demand. About 95% of graduates continue to work at Tata Steel for at least 10 years; in 2016, the programme (MBO levels 3 and 4) was the best senior secondary vocational training programme in the Netherlands. Tata Steel's Academy has a 90% pass rate.
- Our IJmuiden site employs over 9,200 people. All, in all 11,500 people work for Tata Steel Netherlands.
- The Tata Steel site measures 750 hectares and is spread over 3 municipalities: Velsen, Beverwijk and Heemskerk. The surface area of the site is equal to some 1,100 football fields.
- We have our own 80 km road network, our own 100 km railway network, our own gas pipeline and electricity network, and no less than 55 kilometres of conveyor belt.
- Every day, large ships dock at our quays to deliver raw materials. One ship may contain as much as 170,000 tons of raw material.
- Per person we use 1 kilo of steel per day. At Tata Steel IJmuiden we produce 7 million tonnes of high-quality steel every year.
