Steel in the IJmond region
There has been a steelmaking industry in IJmond for over a century. We are keen to continue this in a future-proof manner. We are accelerating measures to reduce our impact on the living environment as quickly as possible. Your perception as a local resident is a key starting point in this respect. We have summarised our approach in the Roadmap Plus.
All measures in Roadmap Plus
We already started the Roadmap back in 2019, so we are not entirely starting from scratch. We are now building on these improvements, setting ambitious goals for the coming years. We are taking additional measures, making additional investments and implementing environmental projects at an accelerated pace. As a result, instead of completing Roadmap Plus in 2030, we are set to realise as many measures as possible this year and in 2024. The DeNOx installation at the Pelletising Plant is scheduled for 2025.

2022
In March 2022, we commissioned a high-tech environmental installation for the Cold Strip Mill. This helps stop the release of PAHs during steel annealing. We have also worked hard on reducing emissions of the Sintering Plant, the Blast Furnaces Auxiliary Materials Plant and Coking and Gas Plant 2.
Measurements by independent measurement agencies show we are on the right track. In IJmuiden, we are measuring a 50% reduction in PAHs compared to 2019.
2023
We expect to reduce lead emissions by approximately 70% in 2023. This is achieved by means of the dust removal plant of the Pelletising Plant and additional exhaust systems for the BOS Plant and Blast Furnaces. We expect this to reduce the emissions of heavy metals by some 55%. Particulate matter will be reduced by approximately 35%. These reductions are in comparison to levels at the start of Roadmap 2030 in 2019.
We also want to reduce the odour load by about 85% (compared to last 10 years) by 2023 for the immediate residential areas in Wijk aan Zee, IJmuiden and Beverwijk.
2024
We expect to reduce dust precipitation in Wijk aan Zee by about 65%. In part by realising a windbreak along the warehouses and reducing dust dispersion at the Hoogovens bunkers.
2025
The DeNOx installation (part of the DeNOx and dust removal plant) of the Pelletising Plant will be delivered in 2025. This will help us further reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by some 30% from that year on.
